The last day of the WoW Forever beta: world bosses, raid legendaries and a zombie plague

For the beta's final 24 hours Blizzard filled the starting zones with world bosses, level-free legendaries and a zombie outbreak. What happened, how players reacted, what Blizzard said after the beta closed and how the Beta Timewalking stats site works.

Describes the one-time beta celebration of October 22–23, 2026, using official posts, the channel's own recordings and identified player reports. Event loot, potions and boss behavior say nothing about the launch game.

A goodbye party in the starting zones

On October 22, Kaivax announced a final 24 hours of beta celebration across the seven starting zones, ending with the beta's planned closure at 10 AM PDT on October 23. The post was explicit that the one-time attractions would almost certainly include items and experiences that will not exist after launch. Nothing below should be read as a preview of the live game.

World bosses appeared where low-level characters gather. In Elwynn Forest a crowd fought Super Hogger, who according to one player report changed names as his health fell, through Ultra Hogger and Giga Hogger to Cosmic Hogger, Bane of Elwynn; our recording shows the final name. Azuregos landed on a farm in Elwynn. We joined raids on Lord Kazzak in the middle of Kharanos and on Prince Thunderaan, a large wind elemental at Iceflow Lake in Dun Morogh, and other players reported Kazzak near Brill and Thunderaan outside Orgrimmar. In Mulgore, Voracious, an abomination that grew with every player it killed, ended our Tauren's run while Infernals were already in pursuit.

One loot pool, no level requirements

It did not matter much which boss you killed. Our own footage and player reports show them dropping from the same pool of legendaries and epics, including Thunderfury, Sulfuras, Benediction, Quel'Serrar and Rhok'delar, and one kill could produce more than one copy: the loot window on a Kazzak corpse we recorded listed two Sulfuras alongside Thunderfury. None of it had a level requirement, so characters around level 10 walked around in Tier 1 with raid legendaries. Event vendors sold elixirs for bonus experience, movement speed and size, and some players stacked enough size potions to become giants.

One player near Brill described a creative use of that. Another raid had already tagged Kazzak, so the player, a level 30 Tauren Protection Warrior, drank the new potions plus five size potions, pulled Kazzak away and dragged him toward Undercity until he reset. The player's own raid then took the tag and the kill, the player won the roll on the one Thunderfury that dropped, and then came whispers from the other raid calling the player a rat. That is one account, not something we reproduced.

The zombie plague and a divided reaction

Towns also filled with zombies. One player reported finding poisoned grain in Razor Hill and starting to turn after eating it, and forum posters immediately compared the outbreak to the zombie plague before Wrath of the Lich King in 2008. Another described logging in at the Brill inn, being swarmed by ten zombies, turning, and then infecting or killing anyone on the roads. Players reported that turned zombies could attack others without a PvP flag and that town guards were often infected too. We recorded Plague Zombies in Kharanos but did not test how infection worked.

Reaction was split, and some posters said the argument sounded like 2008. Some players wanted one last normal day to finish their testing and could not reach a mailbox without a boss or zombie on top of them. Others organized raids, killed the same bosses repeatedly and handed out the loot.

Five weeks of beta, and what players kept mentioning

The celebration was only the final day of a five-week beta. On the October 22 podcast, Clay Stone called it one of the biggest betas he thinks Blizzard has had, and said the team kept raising concurrency limits on the first day. In goodbye threads on Reddit and Blizzard's forums, the recurring praise was for slower fights, levels that feel like real steps, travel that takes time, and the people met along the way. A Reddit post by a 30-year-old who had gamed all their life but never played WoW before had passed 2,000 upvotes when we read it on October 24; they wrote that it was the first game that made them feel they were in another world.

The most repeated complaint in the same threads was layering, often from people who enjoyed the beta: an invite during an escort quest moving someone to another copy of the zone, raid groups split across layers, and world PvP opponents vanishing mid-fight. After the beta closed, Kaivax thanked players for five weeks of testing and said the team was focusing on priority issues before launch. Aggrend thanked players on X for exposing bugs and behavior the team could not reproduce internally, and announced that the following week's podcast would cover the technology behind layering and planned improvements. Neither post said layering had been fixed.

Beta Timewalking and the lighthouse

In the final minutes, a player in chat at the Stormwind Harbor lighthouse linked Blizzard's Beta Timewalking site. After logging in with a Battle.net account, it shows personal beta statistics such as most played class and zone, PvP killing blows, fish caught, jumps, crafting and a nemesis. The separate stress test is not included. Up to four statistics can be placed on a card, reordered, saved as an image, and the BattleTag hidden. The card shows percentiles, but the site does not explain the population behind them. Our card read: most played class Hunter, 252 PvP killing blows, 67 Dwarf Shamans met and most played zone Stormwind City. We could not confirm how long the site stays online after October 24.

The goodbye at the lighthouse was not only ours: players on the European forums described the same crowd, a countdown and people swimming out to sea. Our group swam out together until the game disconnected. The next dates are October 27, when early character creation and name reservation open with three characters in total across all Rulesets, and launch on November 4.
