Choose a main that can change the evening’s plan
Decide whether Druid’s four roles suit you. Understand the mana and gear costs, Bear tanking, Cat energy, Balance’s late Moonkin and Restoration’s preparation.

A guide to choosing your main, adapted from our full class episode. The playstyle recommendations are our assessment; inspect the abilities and try your talents before committing.
Choose the flexibility, then prepare for it
Druid is an attractive main when you want one character to cover different kinds of evenings. Cat can handle your solo quests, Bear can tank a dungeon and a healing set can give you another way to join friends. Specializing in Restoration does not take away Prowl or your animal forms. The point is having options when a group needs something different, rather than replacing every specialist equally well.
That flexibility is why xavier says he plans to main Druid at launch. His episode describes leveling mostly as Cat, then grouping with another player on a shared quest, shifting to Bear for packs and healing between them. That is his example of adapting a session, not a rule to pull five enemies every time. Our recommendation is to choose Druid if that change of job sounds enjoyable enough to justify the preparation.
FORMS STAY; SPECIALTIES NEED A BUILD
Bear for tanking and Cat for melee damage, with different equipment priorities.
Balance and Restoration retain the baseline animal forms, but need their own talents and gear.

Mana and bag space are part of the class
A form change has a mana cost, and leaving the form to heal spends more of the reserve. A class-quest idol, gear and suitable talents make repeated switching easier, but do not remove the need to check that reserve before the next pull. Tanking, Cat damage and healing also want different equipment. Keeping a second set in your bags is a practical consequence of wanting to do two jobs well.
Omen of Clarity is baseline from 20. Spells and attacks can trigger Clearcasting, making the next eligible damage or healing spell or offensive ability free, whether its usual cost is mana, Rage or energy. Notice the proc and use it on something that normally costs a resource. Wrath and resource-free abilities do not consume it; it is not a promise of a free form change. Weapon upgrades matter in forms too: weapon DPS, enchants and procs carry into Bear and Cat, and potions can be used without shifting out.

Bear rewards watching the whole pull
Bear arrives through a class quest at 10. Growl is the taunt for an enemy attacking someone else. Faerie Fire can pull from range and reduce armor, but is not another taunt. Against a pack, Demoralizing Roar weakens nearby melee attacks; Swipe hits three enemies, while changing targets for Maul helps you attend to the rest. Enrage supplies Rage at the cost of armor, so use it with the incoming damage in mind.
The basic Bear kit can tank leveling dungeons. The October 30 tree adds talented Lacerate, a stacking bleed that causes high threat, while Primal Bite moves to the final Feral row: level 40 at the earliest with standard, focused progression. These are later investments, not prerequisites for your first dungeon. Frenzied Regeneration converts Rage to health and Dire Bear improves armor. Bash stuns from 14, while Feral Charge in Bear interrupts and immobilizes; each has its own conditions and cooldown.

Cat trades reserve mana for more energy
Cat at 20 changes how you approach a quest. Prowl lets you avoid unwanted fights and choose an opening. Shred requires you to be behind the target, so solo combat often continues with Claw, Rake and finishers after that opening. The revised Ferocious Bite rank list begins at 24. The Cat version of talented Feral Charge leaps behind an enemy; use the Bear version when the job is interrupting a cast.
Shifting Power now sits in the final Feral row, requires Predatory Discipline, and converts 55% of base Mana into 40 Energy on an 8-second cooldown. Standard progression can reach that row at 40. Primal Bite is another final-row choice with its own prerequisite; reaching the row does not give both talents for one point. Berserk and Improved Shifting Power were removed. The resource choice remains: spend reserve Mana to keep attacking, or keep it for a heal or other support.

Balance waits for a form; Restoration plans a pull ahead
Balance means spending much of leveling as a caster. DoTs keep working while Wrath and Starfire handle direct damage. Eclipse, a talent from 30, lets Wrath shorten upcoming Starfire casts; full Overgrowth increases how many enemies you can keep rooted. Moonkin is the final talent at 40, bringing armor, a group critical-strike bonus and more Omen triggers. It prevents healing spells, so helping someone with a heal means leaving it.
Restoration puts preparation into healing. Rejuvenation and Regrowth set up Swiftmend, which now requires and consumes your own active effect to provide its instant heal. Wild Growth still heals a target’s party over time, but now has a 3-second cast: it is not another instant response while moving. Bloom adds healing when your Rejuvenation or Regrowth expires, with a smaller amount when dispelled. Nature’s Swiftness and Tranquility remain separate tools. Animal forms offer travel, stealth and situational help; a healer’s gear and talents do not become a full tank build simply by entering Bear.

Keep the shared tools in view
Revive at 12 brings someone back outside combat. Rebirth at 20 works during a fight, but has a half-hour cooldown and needs a reagent. That distinction makes ordinary dungeon recovery much more convenient without making the combat resurrection disposable. Mark of the Wild is shared utility, and Innervate at 40 improves a target’s mana regeneration. Leader of the Pack is a Feral talent for critical-strike chance, rather than a bonus every Druid supplies.
Aquatic and Travel Forms help you move, while Teleport: Moonglade offers a foothold on Kalimdor alongside your Hearthstone. In battlegrounds, Prowl and shifting out of movement effects create opportunities to carry a flag or approach an unattended objective. These are possibilities to use with the team, not automatic captures. Dual specialization at 40 supports two prepared builds; its launch price and all switching conditions were not established in the episode’s checked sources.

Pick the character you want to keep changing with
Night Elf and High Order Skyborne are Alliance choices; Tauren and Windshaper Skyborne are Horde. Consider their utility and how your forms look. Tauren has War Stomp, while Skyborne can glide in animal forms. The two Skyborne variants have different short-duration active benefits, strengthened by preparation in the world. There is no established level 60 performance result here that requires choosing one race.
Professions are optional. Herbalism with Alchemy fits a character that can use potions while shifted; Skinning with Leatherworking suits making leather gear. Our final test is simpler than a ranking: are you happy to watch mana, carry equipment and sometimes pause your own damage to solve the group’s problem? If yes, Druid offers a convincing reason to keep playing the same character even when the evening’s plan changes.
