Shaman: choose the toolkit before you choose the spec
Enhancement, Elemental, Restoration and small-group tanking share the same Shaman utility. Decide whether the totems, mana and attention they require fit your main.

A guide to choosing your main, adapted from our full class episode. The playstyle recommendations are our assessment; inspect the abilities and try your talents before committing.
Forever reduces setup without removing positioning
At 20, Call of the Elements puts down a saved selection of up to four totems in one cast. It is a cast, not an instant deployment of the entire set. Totemic Recall becomes available at the same level and returns a quarter of the mana required for the totems it removes. Totemic Projection follows at 22, moving active totems to the next location, with a mana cost and cooldown that discourage thoughtless repetition.
Many long-lasting buff and cleansing totems now stay up for five minutes, but short tactical totems have their own durations. Weapon imbues last an hour. Ghost Wolf at 20 speeds up outdoor travel; making it instant and usable indoors requires the Enhancement talent. Astral Recall and Reincarnation arrive at 30. Carrying an ankh is part of the latter bargain: returning where you died is useful, but it is not a resurrection you cast on a friend.
THE TOTEM TOOLS
These are spell-learning levels. A saved totem set still requires a cast and mana.

Enhancement turns a weapon upgrade into an event
Enhancement is the two-handed route for players who like steady melee punctuated by sudden bursts. Windfury Weapon gives a hit the chance to produce two extra attacks. Stormstrike connects the physical and magical parts of the class by strengthening a following lightning spell or Earth Shock on that target. Intellect can support the melee build through talents, so the stat filling your mana bar also has an offensive use.
Later, Maelstrom Weapon stacks from melee damage can make Lightning Bolt instant and free. That talent is specifically about Lightning Bolt; it should not be read as permission to cast any heal instantly. Rage of the Farseer speeds up your own attacks rather than granting a raid-wide Bloodlust. Our attraction to Enhancement is the weight of a good two-hander and an exciting proc. Its repeated loop and dependence on the weapon can become the part another player tires of.

Choose Elemental for the spells it has
Elemental mixes lightning with fire. Lava Burst is a talent reachable as early as 30, and it gains damage against your own Flame Shock. That interaction does not promise the guaranteed critical strike familiar from later versions of the game. Lightning Overload can add a free second Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning, while an Elemental talent makes Earthbind root briefly when placed. These are different ways of setting up a cast, not reasons to stop using the shared toolkit.
The episode is cautious about the early experience: smaller Chain Lightning hits and mana breaks contribute to its rough beta reputation. Those concerns do not establish a final level 60 damage ranking. Elemental Mastery, reachable at 40, changes a short burst window, but a later talent should not be treated as proof that every earlier frustration disappears. Our advice is to pick Elemental if lightning, fire and arranging those windows are already enjoyable to you.

Restoration adds group healing as you grow
Restoration uses direct heals for ordinary damage and keeps the Shaman’s other answers within reach. Nature’s Swiftness supplies an emergency instant cast. Water Shield is an early Restoration talent, not a baseline trainer spell for every Shaman: other specs can spend points to reach it, which delays something in their main tree. Mana management therefore involves a build decision as well as a drinking break.
Chain Heal arrives at 40, so the early healer mostly casts at one player at a time. Riptide adds an instant heal, healing over time and support for a following Chain Heal on its target. Healing and mana totems still serve your party, whereas several offensive and resistance totems extend their benefits to nearby raid members. Our view is that Restoration suits a healer who likes using utility between heals. Someone who wants fewer moving parts may prefer a simpler direct-healing class.

Tanking is an option with a defined ceiling of evidence
Small-group tanking uses Rockbiter together with Spirit Weapons for threat and parrying. Earth Shock adds threat when an enemy moves away, while Improved Stormstrike can reset the strike after a dodge or parry. There is no personal taunt. Stoneclaw can pull pressure onto a totem, but it does not give the player a normal taunt button. Blizzard describes the role as filling in for a small group; we do not turn that into a promise of raid-main-tank viability.
Totem coordination also matters when you join as damage. Windfury Totem and Grace of Air compete for the air slot, and Windfury Weapon is not the same effect as the totem. Talk to another Shaman about what each will bring. Dwarf is the Alliance choice; Horde offers Orc, Tauren, Troll and Windshaper Skyborne. Professions are optional, and dual spec begins at 40. Choose this main if changing jobs while keeping an active support toolkit sounds rewarding, and accept that those tools continue to ask for attention.
