A guide to choosing your main, adapted from our full class episode. The playstyle recommendations are our assessment; inspect the abilities and try your talents before committing.

Decide whether you enjoy the quiet part

Paladin suits a player who likes preparing a fight and keeping an answer in reserve. Choose your seal, put up an aura and hand out blessings; then accept that ordinary combat leaves space between your active attacks. Judgement and Holy Strike give the weapon swings some shape, but this is an unhurried class. A player who enjoys a constant sequence of attacks may find that rhythm frustrating even when the character is winning.

Our reason to recommend it is the responsibility that arrives when a pull goes wrong. All three specializations retain tools for rescuing someone else. Retribution carries a two-handed weapon, Protection tanks with a shield and Holy heals, yet each remains recognizably a Paladin. Mail is available from the start and plate training comes at 40. The choice of spec changes the main job; it does not remove the emergency buttons.

The rescue can change who takes the next hit

Blessing of Protection prevents physical attacks against its target. That can save a healer, but the protected player cannot attack or use physical abilities while it lasts. They can still cast. Using it on the tank needs particular care: enemies may turn toward everyone else, so it is a brief rescue to coordinate, not a way to keep tanking normally under immunity. Blessing of Freedom answers roots and slows instead.

Lay on Hands heals for an amount equal to the Paladin’s maximum health, spending all remaining mana. Divine Shield gives you time to heal or withdraw, while Hammer of Justice can stop a dangerous enemy with a stun. Divine Intervention sacrifices you to protect a friend, and Redemption brings fallen friends back outside combat. These tools have conditions and long waits between uses. They make mistakes recoverable; they do not make a group invulnerable.

What changes in the everyday routine

Forever removes the need to reapply a seal after every Judgement. The seal still has its own half-minute duration, so it needs refreshing, but judging no longer consumes it. Holy Strike is learned at level 6. Long blessings last an hour. Salvation, Mass Salvation, Blessing of Light and Greater Blessing of Light are no longer listed in the current trainer spellbook; do not plan them as available group buffs. These changes reduce repeated setup without turning the class into a fast melee rotation.

Consecration becomes a baseline spell at 20. Its additional damage is limited to the first four enemies entering the area; that is not a hard limit of four enemies hit by the whole spell. The taunt starts at 10 through Judgement while Seal of Fury is active. A damage Paladin must change seals before using that taunt, and spending Judgement for damage also puts that rescue on cooldown.

PLAN THE PULL

THE TAUNT USES JUDGEMENT

Ready to hold an enemy

Use Seal of Fury before judging the target.

Judgement just spent

Its cooldown also delays the taunt. Plan the next loose mob.

Retribution and Protection ask different kinds of patience

Retribution is our straightforward starting point for solo questing. A strong two-hander matters, Seal of Command supplies sudden Holy hits, and judging Command against a stunned target gives the stun a damage use as well. You can heal from the beginning, and Seal of Light later adds healing through your swings. Damage and recovery draw on the same mana bar, so spending heavily on a difficult pull can still lead to drinking.

Protection builds around Righteous Fury, Consecration and a shield. Righteous Fury is trained at 10 and now raises all threat by 33%, with another 90% for Holy attacks. Holy Shield moves to row five, reachable at 30 with standard, focused progression. Shieldsworn is the later capstone: it shortens Holy Strike’s cooldown and lets the shield strike trigger Holy Shield and Shield Specialization without consuming their charges or cooldowns, with a 6-second spell-block window. That does not give every early shield build permanent protection from casters. Check the current requirements rather than the tree shown in the older recording.

Holy rewards watching the pull

Holy begins with direct healing: the larger, slower Holy Light and the quicker Flash of Light. Our view is that this suits someone who would rather watch the fight than maintain many separate healing timers. Cast time still matters. Before instant tools arrive, moving out of danger can mean a gap in healing, and a long fight can exhaust your mana.

Holy Shock remains a row-five talent, reachable at 30 with standard, focused progression. The new row-four Oath of Light improves your direct heals on one chosen ally, although its bonus amount is not established in the current reference. Boundless Light raises Holy Shock’s critical chance when healing allies outside your Oath. Holy Power now increases the critical healing bonus of Holy spells, rather than supplying the old critical-chance bonus. Light’s Vigil is friendly-target-only and prepares party healing through your next Holy Shock; it cannot be used as the former enemy-target damage effect. Voice of Truth is trained at 20 instead of requiring its old talent.

Choose the group job and the limitations together

In a dungeon, blessings, an aura and emergency healing remain useful even when you joined as damage. Switching into a different role for one pull is easier than changing your full build: a sustained tanking or healing job can need different talents and equipment. Dual specialization starts at 40; before then, changing your build means a trainer respec. No profession is compulsory. Engineering can add ranged control, while crafting or gathering can fit the way you prefer to spend your time.

The recurring weakness is reach. Paladin has no ordinary quick interrupt or enemy movement slow, so a stun is not a substitute for a kick against every target. In PvP, a partner who pins an enemy down can change the experience. Humans and Dwarves are the Alliance choices; Undead are the Horde option. Our verdict is a yes for patient players who enjoy protecting others, and a poor fit for someone who wants constant attacks or effortless pursuit. Level 60 raid performance remains an open question in the episode’s pre-launch evidence.
