Honor, Rank Points and the climb to Rank 14
A dated guide to Blizzard's October 7 PvP explanation, the beta's visible progression panel, gear upgrades and the questions left open about seasons.
Coverage:

Start with the difference between Honor and Rank Points
Forever's PvP progression explanation brought the familiar rank names back, including Grand Marshal and High Warlord, with a different structure around earning and spending. The first distinction is essential: Honor buys rewards, while Rank Points move a character through the rank track.
Blizzard listed defeating players, completing battlegrounds and doing PvP quests as ways to earn Honor. It listed battlegrounds and PvP quests as examples of Rank Point activities. That wording did not settle whether an ordinary world PvP kill also awarded Rank Points, so Honor from a kill should not automatically be treated as evidence of rank progress.
| Resource | What it does | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Honor | Currency spent on PvP rewards. | Currency tab and vendors. |
| Rank Points | Progress through ranks 1–14. | PvP tab in the character pane. |
| Legacy Points | Account progression from designated seasonal tasks. | The relevant journey tasks; a separate reward. |
What the weekly cap means in the beta panel
The beta panel described a ceiling on total rank progress that increased each week as the season advanced. It was not a fixed allowance of 750 points to earn every week. The track ended at 24,750 points for rank 14; 750 was the requirement to move from no rank to rank 1.
In the creator's October 8 observations, Honor appeared in the currency tab with a 25,000 maximum. The separate rank display could still show zero of 750 after battleground play. That observation establishes what the UI showed; it does not prove why no Rank Points appeared or that every battleground was functioning identically.
Datamined cap values suggested rank 3 could be available in week 1 and rank 14 from week 10. Those timings were projections from client data, not an official promise that every player could reach rank 14 in exactly ten weeks. A rising cap alone also does not fully establish the rules for a late starter or someone who misses a week.
A currency and a rank track
These figures serve different purposes. They are not interchangeable weekly targets.
Why battleground choice and holiday weeks matter
Blizzard said the battleground featured during its holiday week would award extra Honor and Rank Points. That gives players a reason to look at the rotation instead of assuming one battleground is always the efficient choice.
The team also said it had reviewed Honor gains across battlegrounds to make them more consistent. The stated aim was to avoid pushing everyone into Alterac Valley simply because of Honor efficiency. This was an announced balancing direction, rather than a complete measured comparison of every queue, match duration and reward rate.
For planning, check the active holiday and your own progress panel. Time spent playing and rewards received are different measurements: a shorter match or faster queue can change an evening's results even when the reward for an individual activity looks attractive.
How blue gear becomes epic gear
The announced gear path included a blue set and an epic set purchased through Honor. Upgrading an individual piece required the blue piece and an Emboldened Seal. Buying the seal also required the appropriate PvP rank, so having currency alone did not bypass progression.
This creates two questions for every planned upgrade: can you afford its components, and have you reached the required rank? The episode highlighted the PvP trinket at rank 2 and epic weapons at rank 14. It did not supply a verified item-by-item spending plan for every class, so avoid assuming all slots unlock together.
Blizzard also described additional or reworked options for specializations that had lacked suitable rewards. Shamans were a clear example, with healer, melee and caster sets. Horde players were directed to the Hall of Legends in Orgrimmar, while Alliance rewards were at the Champion's Hall in Stormwind. The Alliance location was also visible in the creator's beta material.
What resets each season?
Each season was described as having a journey with weekly tasks that award Honor and Rank Points. Three designated tasks per season also awarded one Legacy Point each. Blizzard said those Legacy tasks would remain available in later seasons, a useful distinction from tasks that disappear permanently when a season ends.
In the September 17 live Q&A, Blizzard discussed resetting the PvP track each season in step with raid releases. The roadmap also listed PvP season refreshes in spring and summer 2027. Those announcements establish a seasonal structure without supplying an exact duration for every season.
The October 7 article did not explain every consequence for purchased gear, mounts or titles when the track resets. It is therefore too strong to say players lose all their rewards, and equally too strong to promise that nothing besides the rank bar changes. Our coverage kept those unanswered questions separate from the confirmed existence of seasons.
Darkspear Islands adds another place to progress
Blizzard's companion article introduced Darkspear Islands as a 15-versus-15 battleground for levels 30–60, off Dustwallow Marsh. Teams contest four capture points and a central flag, carrying the flag to a base their team holds. The first team to 2,000 points wins.
The announced queue routes were a battlemaster in a major capital or portals at faction bases in the Barrens: Merchant Coast for Horde and Northwatch for Alliance. Reputation vendors offered gear, with a short questline at Exalted rewarding a tabard.
The practical progression loop is to distinguish the match objective from the reward systems around it. Capture points and flag deliveries decide the battle; Honor, Rank Points and reputation are separate reasons for participating. Before choosing a long-term gearing route, inspect which of those totals actually changes after play and compare it with the current requirements on your desired reward.
