Written guide updated 26 October 2026: Blizzard added Roleplay-PvP to the launch lineup in its 22 October announcement. The original September episode predates that change. Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP are the four announced launch choices; Hardcore follows later.

What does realmless mean for your character?

The most useful way to understand Forever's realmless announcement is to start with the character-creation decision. Blizzard said players would choose a ruleset rather than a traditional named realm from a long list. That choice determines the type of world you enter and the players with whom you can group.

This guide follows Blizzard's September 21 ruleset article and the BlizzCon Deep Dive covered in our original episode, updated with the October 22 announcement adding Roleplay-PvP for launch. Realmless does not mean that every character, regardless of preferences, shares one unrestricted pool for all activities.

Blizzard described each ruleset as comparable to a mega realm. The motivation was to preserve the population advantages of large realms while reducing the risk of choosing a small home that loses players later, or crowding into a popular realm with long queues. Those are design goals, not a guarantee that no launch queue or population problem can occur.

Four launch rulesets, with Hardcore arriving later

Normal is the option for players who want to focus on adventuring and choose when to fight opposing players. Many Classic players refer to this experience as PvE. PvP places hostile-player encounters into the ordinary journey through the world, with the risk of being attacked much more often.

Roleplaying adds naming and behavior expectations for players who want to inhabit their characters. Blizzard confirmed Roleplay-PvP as an additional launch option on October 22. Agree on the exact option with your group rather than assuming that Roleplaying and PvP characters can group interchangeably.

Hardcore remains a later option, not one of the four announced launch choices. Its permanent-death structure and isolated economy make it a different commitment from simply selecting a harder leveling route. Its release date is unknown in these sources; do not assume it is available on November 4.

Can friends on different rulesets run a dungeon together?

Blizzard's announced answer was no: cross-ruleset grouping was not supported for dungeons and raids. Horde and Alliance also remained separate. Being in the same region or sharing a friends list did not remove either restriction.

Battlegrounds were treated differently. Blizzard said they could include players from other rulesets, with Hardcore excluded. This is an exception for that activity, not a reason to assume a Normal character can join a PvP friend's dungeon group.

The practical mistake to avoid is coordinating only the faction. Two Alliance friends can still end up separated for ordinary group content if one chooses Normal and the other chooses PvP. Agree on both choices before investing time in characters, particularly if you are assembling a regular dungeon party or guild.

Cross-ruleset battleground participation is a separate announced exception, excluding Hardcore.

How the one-faction rule on PvP works

On the PvP ruleset, Blizzard said an account could create characters for only one faction. Making an Alliance character prevents creating Horde characters there, and the opposite applies if the account begins with Horde. Coordinate that first choice with the people you expect to play alongside.

This restriction should be kept separate from population-balancing measures. Blizzard also discussed systems similar to Season of Discovery, where creation on one faction could be temporarily restricted to protect balance. The September material did not establish every trigger or threshold that Forever would use.

Likewise, the article did not provide a detailed account-management procedure for every edge case. This guide does not promise that deleting a character removes the lock, that paid services bypass it, or that a second faction becomes available later. Those would require a specific official rule rather than an assumption based on other versions of Warcraft.

Can you switch rulesets, and what happens after Hardcore death?

For ordinary characters, the announcement said you could not freely hop between rulesets. To play on a different one, you would create a new character there. Treat the original choice as meaningful instead of planning to move whenever friends change their minds.

Hardcore had a specific exception. Blizzard said a dead Hardcore character could transfer out to another ruleset, including PvP and Roleplay. That announced route after death is distinct from an unrestricted transfer service for living characters across every ruleset.

Collections and Legacy points were described as account-wide across the regular rulesets, with a one-way exception for Hardcore. Things earned in Hardcore could appear elsewhere, while progress from the other rulesets would not flow back into its closed ecosystem. That separation preserves the meaning of starting a Hardcore character within that environment.

Will you still recognize people without a named home realm?

Blizzard said it wanted players to encounter familiar faces while leveling, meet guildmates in the world, and recognize someone who helped with a quest the day before. It also discussed language preference as part of the experience. These are useful goals for understanding the intended social structure.

The public explanation did not fully describe the mechanism deciding every repeated encounter. It should not be read as a guarantee that choosing a language places every speaker in one permanent layer, or that players can manually control their world copy. Our episode reported concerns about layering as player feedback, rather than confirming a complete technical model.

For a group deciding where to begin, settle the controllable choices first: ruleset, faction, expected play style and a shared plan for grouping. If permanent death, roleplay expectations or constant hostile-player risk would split the group, resolve that disagreement before character creation. Realmless removes the traditional realm-name discussion; it leaves those gameplay decisions important.
